365 :: july 1, 2010

8 Jul

july 1, 2010. i had the ultimate nerd encounter today at work. in general, i think of myself as pretty darn nerdy, but there’s no comparison for what took place today. before i begin, please watch this video and get the voice of kermit the frog (as phil phillip), with the long, drawn-out, stylized pronunciation of each word, in your head. ready?

i was at the reference desk when i was approached by a boy of no more than seventeen. he asked if he had “indeed found the location of the reference desk to which he was directed by the staff member from the circulation department.”

“i am in pursuit of several volumes of manga, which i see that your facility does not currently own. i was led to believe that i might request the purchase of such items. are you the person to whom i should speak regarding this matter?”

“uh, yeah. here’s a form to fill out. if you have more than one title, just list them on the back.”

he takes the form and begins to fill it out, writing the titles in artistic scrawl on the back. he starts to fill out the front and pauses thoughtfully.

“i see that you require the entry of a date. should i use today’s date of july 1st or any date?”

“um, today’s date, please. uh, yeah, that’s what that means.” my mind was already blown, so i couldn’t match his vocabulary or elocution, therefore i went with amused “ums” and “uhs” and “yeahs.” way to go, degreed librarian.

“i’ve noticed a discrepency. you require the entry of the title on the front, but i’ve listed them on the back. how shall i proceed?”

“uh, just write ‘titles on back’ and maybe draw an arrow so we know to flip it over.”

“an arrow. hmmm. humorous.”

hmmm. in exactly the same way as kermie. i just about died.

    Wow. I should be so pleased as to meet such a unique individual as of whom you speak. Perhaps the patron was a vampire, born in a previous century?
