thrift love thursday :: 06.24.2010

{thrift love thursday will be a (hopefully) regular feature. i plan on sharing one or some of my favorite thrifty finds each week. i hope you enjoy them!}

you never know what you’re going to find at an estate sale. sometimes it’s a treasure trove; sometimes it’s a dump heap; sometimes it just really stinks… literally.  i popped into an estate sale at the very end of my lunch break last friday (read: i was already late before i stopped) and i almost missed a box full of old glasses and sunglasses.

it was an instant case of nerd lust. or librarian love. these sparkly cat eye glasses (from the 1950s or 1960s?) were tucked away in an ugly case that i initially passed over.

apparently, the lady whose belongings were being sold was quite the character and she had a good stash of wacky glasses. i ended up with several pairs of her perscription glasses and sunglasses, most of which were from italy and france.

a few weeks ago, i stopped in a new thrift store in the area and found this great atomic-era leaf platter.

this piece was made in 1952 and is part of the california pottery collection by claire lerner, a prolific potter in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
